I’ve always liked the 50mm f/1.4 in manual mode, I shoot everything in manual mode and never trust the built in light meter. If you forget your light meter, you could always get very close, take a reading with the camera light meter and then resume the distance of your choice.

My first choice is 90mm (35mm eq) lens for portraits. This avoids the big-nose syndrome that occurs with a normal lens. So, choose a lense a little longer than your regular lens or zoom out a little to find the correct camera to subject distance. Also, avoid the long lens or higher zoon shot because the face gets flattened and looks unnatural.

I would like to additionally know about the color setting in camera for best result of portrait photography so that I can get smooth and soft face tone. Should I stick to setting standard ( SD in my nikon d5100) or any custom setting that i can use ( like changing saturation, contrast, etc) . If then what should be the custom setting..
thank you in advance 🙂

Its a nice introduction to the idea of moving away from the pre-sets on so many cameras.
Personally i run in manually most of the time, probably due to the control freak rampaging around in me … it gives me a small bit more control over my shots than Aperture priority does, but Aperture is a good place to start and in fact I know a lot of people who prefer aperture Priority.
Here is a Family Portrait I did with my 50mm, a nice fast lens, talking about a fast lense is really just saying it can get a load of light quickly, in this case due to Aperture 1.8
