Something not mentioned here: notice the right hand over the left. It’s traditional to the point of superstition, and I’ll leave it at that. Hands are tricky to paint, and even trickier to photograph. The face may portray one age, the hands another. In a seated portrait the right hand should be flatter to show a slimmer profile.

The eye angle is also interesting, almost looking over the artist’s shoulder into the distance. There’s a reason for this. If you or the camera are too close, and the model is looking at either, the eyes can “cross” ever so slightly.

Over the years portraits styles come and go, as do the lighting techniques. It’s like fashion. I haven’t done a formal studio portrait in years. They take time, planning, and styling.

So IMO… He framed smile wit long hairs and clothes, as they compliment to each other but contrasts to the face. (imagine if she would be blonde)
